Your Golf Instructor May Have A Secret

There is an erroneous assumption that many golfers make regarding golf instructors. That mistaken assumption is that all Golf Professionals have extensive training in golf swing theory and teaching methods. The truth is, there are some very well trained golf instructors, but you should also know that many are not.

The titles Head Professional, Assistant Professional, or even Teaching Professional give no indication as to how much training and experience that person has, so don't make assumptions. You should know that the only Golf Instructors who have any intensive training are those who, by their own volition, have sought to develop their knowledge of swing theory and teaching methods. Contrary to popular belief, there is no generalized training program, of any worth, that develops a Golf Professional's knowledge of the golf swing and their teaching ability.

The bottom line is, don't assume—check a Golf Instructor's experience before scheduling a lesson. If you get poor instruction, it's as much your fault for choosing a poor instructor as it is the instructor's fault for not putting more effort into his or her job!

I have more information on other pages on how to find good golf instruction, but basically, there are two bits of information you want to know. First, you want to know about the instructor's teaching background. Secondly, you want to know what it is that makes them a good Golf Instructor—what have they done that shows that they have made, and continue to make, an effort to improve their teaching abilities.

There are golf instructors who have put much time and effort into learning their trade. I highly recommend making an extra effort to seek them out.
