My Way Or The Highway

Frequently, golfers tell me that they would like to take a golf lesson, but they want me to work with the golf swing they have—that is, they don't want me to make any major changes to their golf swing. Of course, I'm willing to do this because I believe in giving the student what they want, but the student needs to understand that without my being able to make significant changes, the swing improvement will be very limited, and the net effect on their golf game will be minimal. For those who do want significant improvement, if you ask me to make you a better golfer, but won't let me change your golf swing, just what is it that am I supposed to do to make you better? I am not a magician! The quality of your golf swing is the major component determining the level of your play.

Here is a simple rule to help you decide if you should be willing to change your swing—if you shoot 95 and you're happy shooting 95, then obviously your swing is good enough. If you shoot 95 but you want to be shooting 85, then your swing is not good enough—you'll have to improve your golf swing. It's really that simple.

I have non-swing related ideas and suggestions throughout this site that can help you play better, but if you really want to improve, you're going to have to bite the bullet and make your golf swing better.

The following is from page 1 of the March 11, 2011 issue of Golfweek magazine:

"Did I make changes?" Nicklaus asked last week. "I made changes constantly in my swing. That's how you get better. If you don't make changes, you don't improve. I don't care who you are, because your body continually changes."
