CEgolf.com Golf Schools—Are They Worth It?Having been an instructor at one of the most highly ranked golf schools in the world (back in the mid 70's to early 80's), I would like to throw in my two cents on the subject. Do I recommend golf schools for those who want to improve their golf games? The answer is a qualified no! I say qualified because if you're willing to think about a few things beforehand, you can make a golf school adventure turn out to be something other than just a very expensive golf vacation, which unfortunately, is what most people end up with. To maximize the benefit from golf schools, there are two main factors to consider. First and foremost, do any of the golf schools you're considering offer a follow-up program where you can continue your instruction? You will need feedback and guidance for your improvement efforts. This follow-up instruction is imperative for golf schools to be effective because you will get off track after you leave the golf school. It happens to everyone, so don't think you're immune! For more on this, please see this page (it should open in a new window): Teacher vs Coach. The second factor is in regard to the quality of instruction and the material being taught at golf schools. Most golfers don't realize it, but most Golf Professionals have very little training in how to teach the golf swing. Therefore, to gain from your golf school experience, you must be very selective—examine the qualifications and background of those who will be instructing you! Also, be aware that many famous instructors don't spend much time, if any, instructing at their golf schools, but they usually will have competent people in charge—get the details before sending your deposit. If you do decide to attend one of the many golf schools available (hopefully you've chosen a golf school for the follow-up program and the quality of instruction, not location or an attractive price), keep your expectations bridled—it's going to take time, practice, and continued instruction to realize significant and lasting improvement. One last thought on golf schools—most golf schools are about hearding them in and hearding them out. They try to get as many sheep, I mean customers, as possible because golf schools are becoming very big business. As with most businesses today, it's usually not about providing the best for the customer, it's about making as much money as possible!
